Class 7: Cruising on the Technology SuperHighway!!

Franny & Sunny
Week four and you're feeling good, right?  Right?  Well, If you are feeling unsure about yourself, take a look at all of the work you have accomplished so far and you will be amazed!  I know I am proud of all of your work and progress.  Two more weeks and you'll be ready to infuse technology into all of your future endeavors!

Don't forget you are all presenting your NETS-S projects tonight and receiving feedback on the assessment you created using GoogleForms.  You also have your cybersafety collaborative sites to work on as well as your TaskStream narratives.  I gave every group (who used color coding) feedback in GoogleDocs, so you can revise accordingly.  Don't forget to either leave a comment or reply to my comment under the area that needed revision.  You also have your PLN assignment (Journal 7) to complete and the Emerging Technology checklist is there for you to see what needs to go on your blogs.

Tonight:  you will be sharing your presentations and revising your TaskStream narratives.  I will introduce the Inspiration/Graphic Organizer assignment as well as any other questions you might have.  Try and get as much work completed in class as you can. . .it will only help you in the long run!  The new issue of L&L is out, August 2011, so I will update the final journal articles.  You are more than welcome to search the L&L archives if there is a particular subject you would like to research.  I will make suggestions for journals 8, & 9; however, you can research your own.  For journal 10, if you so choose, you will select your own article from L&L.

Question:  What is one of your most memorable teacher movies?  Why?

  1. I actually just watched a documentary, Race to Nowhere, about students who are trying to be as academically competitive as possible but it ends up hurting their mental health from all of the pressure. I thought this was a great film because as an educator, I feel more aware of the issues that my students face.

  2. I would have to say "Freedom Writers". An inspirational movie for teachers who really enjoy writing and especially those who teach writing to students of all ages.

  3. Bad Teacher. I just watched it and Cameron Diaz exemplifies everything teachers shouldn't do.

  5. The Faculty. I think we have all had that teacher we believe is an alien. Also John Stewart getting stabbed in the eye with a pen is hilarious :D

  6. The documentary Waiting for Superman. Anyone who is destined to be a teacher will be moved to tears. I went with my special education class last fall to see it in the teacher and there was not a dry eye in the house. Controversial content that inspired a quality debate in our class about the status of public education in America.

  7. Definitely Freedom Writers for me. I've seen this movie in at least three other classes I've taken and in one class I used it in one of my projects. The acting was amazing and the message was even more amazing. It is very inspiring and the fact it is a true story makes it real and proves what good teachers can do for their students.

  8. I think Freedom Writers is probably the only typical "inspirational teacher" movie I've seen, but I'm not sure that I'm actually a huge fan of those movies. If anything, I'd be more interested in a documentary.

  10. Billy Madison. I have never seen a more realistic portrayal of teachers. It's a beautiful documentary that reveals so many of the perils involved with education.

  11. One of my most memorable teacher movies is Stand and Deliver. It has a lot of funny parts and, above all, it is inspirational. It is a film that touches on issues such as the Achievement Gap and institutionalized racism.

  12. I'd say its a tie between Freedom Writers and Waiting for Superman. I think Freedom Writers is a little more moving, probably because it is a typical Hollywood movie. However, Waiting for Superman is a lot more informative and really had me more excited to be a teacher so that I can be one less bad teacher that is just mediocre.

  13. My favorite teacher movie is Freedom Writers. It's so inspirational! It shows the positive impact that a good, caring and passionate teacher can have on students. I think it's what all of us strive for when we enter into this career.

  14. The only one I can even really remember is Stand and Deliver. Mr. Escalante believed in his students and encouraged them. He didn't let them just settle for what was expected of them because of their race, gender or socioeconomic status.

  15. I always liked Stand and Deliver. It seems out of date as I watch it now but I remember when it came out. I also thought it was cool because Edward James Olmos was on the board of directors at my first college, Whittier.

  16. "Lean on Me" and "Dangerous Minds" are two that inspired me long ago. They both remind us that we can't lump students into categories based on appearances or initial attitudes. Teachers need to take the time to really get to know their students and find the best way to help them learn given their individual needs and circumstances.

  17. Stand and Deliver! I saw this movie for the first time in eighth grade. I have watched it many times since then and it always inspires me because Mr. Escalante was so unbelievably dedicated to his students.
After reading everybody else's post though, I think I'm going to go out and watch Freedom Writers, I've never seen!

  18. I have always liked the movie "Stand and Deliver" because Mr. Escalante had a great way of connecting to his students and pushing them to achieve more than society ever thought they could.

  19. I liked the movie "Freedom Writers" because it shows the dedication and hard work that some teachers provide regardless of the criticism they receive from their colleagues.

  20. A movie I like a lot is "Pay it forward." The teacher inspired a student to really try to change the world. It is mainly about the child though, so I'm also going to have to say Freedom writers. These movies show that if teachers are dedicated they can really influence their students.

  22. I liked the movie, "Dead Poets Society," because it got inside the heads of the students and didn't gloss over how great a prep school is. It also showed how to teach outside the box and how students want and can express themselves, while still learning and growing.

  23. Dangerous minds, based on a true story. Based on an ex-marine who went to teach in Belmont, California. It was a really tough neighborhood and she managed to motivate and reach her students! Very inspirational movie.
